BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND
Business Consulting and Benchmarking
Business Consulting and Benchmarking
Established in 2013, BlackBook, Inc.® is a business benchmarking tool that allows business owners to objectively evaluate their emotional attitudes towards their businesses and monitor their financial situations. The end goal is for business owners to have the knowledge and know-how to achieve their personal and business goals, and to fulfill their dreams.
During my presentation "Begin With The End In Mind" I introduce the What's Your Number Calculator. This simple, yet powerful, tool is designed to continually benchmark your progress toward financial independence. My discipline is to review my spreadsheet with my wife and business partner every year.
This exercise will assist you in understanding how others perceive your business and brainstorm steps that you can take to improve your company’s financial position, industry standing and internal workings, as well as your capacity to move on from your business. Use the section on the right to list comments and actionable items.
Potential buyers will want to explore all aspects of your business. Use this due diligence checklist to prepare yourself for the process. Even if you are planning to sell your business several years from now, a buyer may appear with an unsolicited offer at any time and this preparation will enable you to meet their requests quickly and easily without requiring a significant time commitment.
Some of these documents you will have; some you may not. Take your time to gather all of these files. Several of them, such as Articles of Incorporation, will not need to be updated. Other items, such as the Balance Sheet and P&L, should be updated on a rolling 12-month basis. Put them in a central location, whether electronically or on paper, so they can be easily accessed at the right time. An additional benefit to this is that it makes you appear prepared and organized, reflecting favorably on your business. If your Due Diligence Checklist is complete, you are ready to exit – at least from a process standpoint.
